Volunteers at Battery Townsley in Marin Headlands win top national award
The 11 docents at Battery Townsley were named this year's winners of the Federal Park Foundation's George and Helen Hartzog award for prominent volunteer service in a national park. "Only one volunteer group annually wins the reward, and there are 395 national park units," said Marjorie Taft Passage, spokeswoman for the foundation, the charity and fundraising arm of the national parks. Battery Townsley, a mysterious World War II fortification that could launch shells that weighed as much as a Volkswagen more than 25 miles, was reopened by the volunteers in 2007 after being closed for decades.
