    In 1862, Confederate organization considered locating the prime defensive James River battery here to outline the Fusing argosy’s modus operandi to Richmond. Benjamin F.     Dantzler, who was killed on June 2, 1864, in an attack to grab Ft. Dutton. Battery Dantzler played a biggest r in keeping the League Argosy down river. The Battery was forlorn on June 16th 1864, to send troops to Petersburg and retaken that non-stop. Because of this battery and others along the river the Dutch Gap Channel was started on August 10th 1864, and was never opened until after the war.     Olin Miller Dantzler, 22d South Carolina Infantry (killed in act not far-off on 2 June 1864), and constructed in May-June 1864 to design the Federation argosy's passage to Richmond. The battery anchored the northern end of the Howlett Way, a series of Confederate earthworks cut across the Bermuda Hundred peninsula from Abrupt Run on the south to the James River on the north.
